If you regularly experience any of the following after a day at the computer:

• A stiff neck
• Tight shoulders
• A tendency to lean your head forward while working

Your monitor height may be part of the problem.

When a monitor sits too low, the head naturally drifts forward into the posture commonly known as tech neck. Over time, this increases the load on the cervical spine and can contribute to neck and shoulder discomfort.

Is Your Monitor Too Low? A 30-Second Check

Look at your monitor right now and answer these three questions:

• Are you looking down at the screen?
• Is the center of the screen noticeably below your eye level?
• Is your head slightly forward?

If you answered yes to two or more, your monitor is probably too low.

Why a Low Monitor Leads to Neck and Shoulder Pain

A low monitor encourages the head to tilt forward—a posture commonly known as tech neck.

An adult head weighs about 4.5 kilograms. As the head moves forward, however, the load placed on the cervical spine increases dramatically.

Over time, this added strain can lead to muscle tension, increased pressure on the cervical spine, and ongoing neck and shoulder discomfort.

What Is the Correct Monitor Height?

The correct monitor height allows you to view the screen comfortably without leaning your head forward or tilting it excessively up or down.

A good setup should support three key posture markers:

Keep Your Head Above Your Shoulders

When sitting naturally, your ears should be roughly aligned above your shoulders rather than positioned in front of them. This helps the neck support the weight of the head more efficiently and reduces unnecessary muscle strain.

Keep Your Chin Relaxed

Your chin should remain in a neutral, relaxed position—not lifted upward and not tucked excessively toward the chest. When monitor height is correct, the head can stay balanced without conscious effort.

Let Your Eyes Look Slightly Downward

A common mistake is placing the monitor too high and forcing the eyes to look straight ahead or upward. In a relaxed posture, the gaze naturally falls slightly downward. For most people, the center of the screen should sit approximately 15°–20° below the horizontal line of sight.

This combination helps reduce strain on both the neck and the eyes during prolonged computer use.

Calculate Your Monitor Height by Body Height

If you're setting up a workstation, monitor height is one of the most important adjustments you can make. A good starting point is:

• The center of the screen sits about 15°–20° below your line of sight
• The monitor is positioned roughly an arm’s length away, with the elbows slightly bent

In addition to these general guidelines, we also provide height recommendations based on anthropometric data. Simply enter your height to quickly estimate suitable chair height, desk height, and monitor height as a reference for setting up your workspace.

If your desk and chair aren’t adjustable (such as a fixed-height desk), prioritize adjusting your monitor height first—it has the largest impact.

The Easiest Way to Achieve the Right Monitor Height

Knowing the correct monitor height is one thing—maintaining it consistently is another.

If you find that:

• Your monitor never seems to sit at quite the right height
• Your desk feels cramped or difficult to organize
• Books or improvised risers feel unstable and clutter the workspace

it may be time to consider a more adjustable setup.

Two of the most common solutions are:

• Monitor Arms
• Monitor Stands (Risers)

Both make it easier to position the screen at the correct height while creating a cleaner, more organized workspace.

If you use a Studio Display or iMac, choosing the right monitor arm requires a few additional considerations. For more details, see our guide: How to Choose the Right Monitor Arm for Your Studio Display or iMac.

A well-positioned monitor doesn't just improve comfort—it makes good posture easier to maintain throughout the day.
