You've decided on the VESA version of your Studio Display or iMac—but you're not sure whether your desk is ready for a monitor arm. Use this checklist to find out whether your workspace is suitable for mounting one.
1. Is There Enough Space Behind Your Desk?
If there's at least 3cm (1.18inches) of clearance between your desk and the wall, a desk clamp is usually the easiest and most flexible mounting option. As long as your desktop thickness is within the supported range, installation requires no drilling and the monitor arm can be easily repositioned later.
If your desk sits flush against the wall, has an unusually shaped edge, or includes structures underneath that block the clamp, a grommet mount may be a better option. This requires drilling a hole (typically 1-6 cm in diameter) through the desktop, and the desktop material must be strong enough to support the installation.
A grommet mount generally provides greater stability, but its position is permanent once installed. Because the mounting point is usually offset from the center of the display, it's worth planning the location carefully before drilling. If you expect to reposition your monitor arm in the future, a desk clamp is usually the better choice.
2. Is the Desktop Thickness Within the Clamp’s Supported Range?
Every monitor arm has its own supported desktop thickness range, so it's important to check the specifications before buying. Keep in mind that desk clamp and grommet installations may support different thickness ranges.
For example, the INFTYLAB Studio Arm supports desktops 1–7 cm thick.
3. Is Your Desk Edge Compatible with a Clamp Mount?
For a secure installation, your desk should provide at least 2.5 cm (1 inch) of flat surface for the clamp to grip. If the edge is beveled, curved, or otherwise reduces the available clamping surface, the desk clamp may not hold securely, affecting the stability of the monitor arm.
4. Is There Anything Obstructing the Underside of the Desk?
Check whether there are any protruding structures beneath the desktop, such as a support beam located within 5 cm (2 inches) of the desk edge.
If a support beam is located within this area, don't assume a monitor arm won't fit. As long as the combined height of the desktop and the beam remains within the clamp's supported range, you can place a wood block of equal or greater thickness beneath the clamp to create a flat, stable clamping surface.
Final Check Before You Buy
If your desk meets all the requirements above, there's just one final step before placing your order: make sure your monitor arm is compatible with your Apple display.
The Apple Studio Display uses the standard 100 × 100 mm VESA mounting pattern, making it compatible with most monitor arms. The VESA version weighs 5.5 kg (12.1 lbs), so don't rely on maximum weight capacity alone. Choose a monitor arm with a suitable supported weight range and stable spring mechanism to keep the display securely in position over time.
