5. Which Option Is Right for You?
Before buying an Apple Studio Display or iMac, there's one decision worth getting right: Should you choose the original stand or the VESA mount version?
The choice affects more than just appearance. It determines how much flexibility you'll have when adjusting monitor height, organizing your workspace, and adapting your setup over time.
It's also a decision that's difficult to reverse. On Studio Display, converting between a stand and VESA mount typically requires additional parts and service fees, and may not be available in every region. For iMac, the choice is permanent—there is no option to switch to a VESA version after purchase.
This guide compares the available options to help you choose the setup that best fits your workspace, ergonomic needs, and long-term plans.
What Stand Options Do Apple Displays Offer?
Apple Studio Display offers three configurations:
• Tilt Stand — Built-in and non-removable, with tilt adjustment only.
• Height-Adjustable Stand — Adds 105 mm of height adjustment, while retaining tilt adjustment.
• VESA Mount — Designed to be paired with a third-party monitor arm.
iMac offers two configurations:
• Tilt Stand — Built-in and non-removable, with tilt adjustment only.
• VESA Mount — Designed to be paired with a third-party monitor arm.
Because these options are selected at the time of purchase, it's worth understanding the trade-offs before making a decision.
1. Can Your Current Setup Support Good Ergonomics?
Monitor position has a direct impact on comfort. If the screen sits too high, too low, or at the wrong angle, it can contribute to neck, shoulder, and eye strain over time.
For a detailed guide to monitor positioning, see: Finding Your Ideal Monitor Height: An Ergonomic Guide.
Because Apple's built-in stand options offer limited adjustability, many users end up relying on monitor risers, sit-stand desks, or other workarounds to achieve a comfortable viewing position. However, these are not ideal solutions. For instance, adjusting a sit-stand desk to achieve a more comfortable eye level alters the overall surface height, which can inadvertently leave your arms positioned too high or too low for comfortable typing and resting.
• Tilt Stand (original): Provides tilt adjustment only, with a fixed height. It works best if your existing desk setup already places the screen at the correct viewing height.
• Height-Adjustable Stand (Studio Display Only): Adds 105 mm of height adjustment, making it easier to fine-tune screen position. However, the display still cannot swivel, extend forward, or move closer and farther from the user.
• VESA Mount + Monitor Arm: Offers the greatest flexibility, with adjustment for height, depth, and screen position. It's often the easiest way to accommodate different body heights, desk layouts, and working postures. If you want to rotate the display into portrait orientation, a VESA-mounted setup is also the only option.
Portrait mode requires the VESA version and a compatible monitor arm.
2. Do You Want a More Spacious, Uncluttered Desk?
Larger displays typically require larger stands, which can take up a surprising amount of desk space. If your desk already holds a laptop, keyboard, speakers, or other accessories, it's worth considering how much room the display base will occupy.
A viewing distance of roughly 50–70 cm, or about an arm's length, helps create a more comfortable workspace.
• Tilt Stand & Height-Adjustable Stand (original): Both rely on a fixed desktop base that occupies part of your workspace. If you have a large desk and don't mind a permanent footprint, the original stands provide a simple and stable solution.
• VESA Mount + Monitor Arm: By mounting to the edge of the desk or a wall, a monitor arm frees up the space beneath the display. This can make a noticeable difference on compact desks, minimalist setups, or workstations with multiple devices.
3. Price and Future Flexibility
Beyond ergonomics and desk space, cost and upgrade flexibility are also worth considering.
• Tilt Stand: no additional cost. If you're looking for the most affordable option and don't expect your setup to change, it's the simplest choice.
• Height-Adjustable Stand: Adds $400 to the purchase price. It offers more flexibility than the Tilt Stand, but remains limited to height adjustment only.
• VESA Mount: Requires a separately purchased third-party monitor arm or VESA-compatible stand. In return, it offers the greatest flexibility over time and can adapt more easily to future changes in your workspace.
4. Can I Switch the Stand on My Apple Studio Display?
Before purchasing an Apple Studio Display or iMac, it is important to note that the original stand and VESA version are not options users can switch between on their own. If you realize after purchase that the version you chose does not meet your needs, you will usually need to contact an Apple Store or an authorized service provider to confirm whether conversion is available.
This type of conversion may require additional parts and service fees, and availability can vary by product and region. For this reason, it is worth confirming your desk setup, monitor adjustment needs, and long-term usage habits before making a purchase, so you can avoid unnecessary conversion costs later.
What If the Original Stand Isn't Enough?
Some users discover after purchase that the original stand doesn't provide enough height adjustment or flexibility for their workspace.
Two common workarounds are:
1. Monitor Arm Adapter Clamps
These accessories attach to the original stand and allow it to be mounted to a monitor arm. They work, but they add extra hardware to the setup and may not deliver the same look or user experience as a native VESA-mounted display.
2. Monitor Risers
A riser can increase screen height without changing the display itself. However, most risers offer fixed-height adjustment and provide far less flexibility than a monitor arm, making it important to measure carefully before buying.

If your monitor position rarely changes, either of Apple's original stand options may be all you need. If you want a setup that's more ergonomic, easier to adjust, and better able to adapt to different work styles and desk layouts, a VESA-mounted setup offers the greatest flexibility.
